Trócaire got in touch with us to see if we wanted to do a joint event to highlight their Ugandan campaign of getting people who were displaced by war back to their land and growing their own food.

Summer Row’s youngest gardener Nina getting stuck in weeding the first lettuce crop of the season. The Japanese knotweed isn’t going to pick itself so it’s all hands on deck when it comes to keeping the garden free of invasive species (and shoes!)

... 3 for a Euro. Last of the tomato plants ...
The seeds from last year’s tomatoes popped up and you can only eat so much tomatoes. We are looking for volunteers to help out in the garden so we had two impromptu plant giveaway’s, this one down at the bottom of Summer St. Thirty plants didn’t last long. A paramedic swerved pedestrians with a handbrake turn just to get hold of one of them, drivers performed swift U-turns so they could take one home, it was mayhem. We didn’t need the Gardaí in the end, all 30 plants were gone within the hour. People love free things. Happy planting everyone.

the crowd is imminent

We got this email a few weeks ago in response to the piece that was filmed in the garden for Eco-Eye.
Hello. I recently saw your garden on Eco Eye on RTE.
I lived in a house in Summer Row with my parents and siblings until 1968. I am now living in Swords, County Dublin. I was then 18 years of age. There was seven of us living in the house at the bottom of the cul-de-sac on the right hand side. After seeing your garden on TV part or all of our house was on your garden next to the shed in your garden. I have a photo of the lower part of the house with some of us as very young children standing in front of it. I can remember looking out of my bedroom window and seeing an overgrown patch of ground with a small tree next to our outside toilet. I would love to pay a visit to your garden to get a feel of where our house was exactly situated. I have occasionally over the years looked through the locked gates. As I do not live in the area I feel awkward going to it and would like to meet up with someone at the entrance.
Sean Houlihan
Sean, his two sisters and friends dropped by the garden last Sunday, 3rd April. They came equipped with a camcorder, old black and white photograph’s and digital camera’s.

Houlihan Family
Sean and his family used to live in a two-storey house in what was Summer Row, and from the photo above, our garden shed stands in the place where their front door once was. A wall separated his house from the overgrown gardens, that presumably belonged to the Georgian houses that still stand on North Great Charles St. It was fascinating to explore with them the footprints of their own house and those of their neighbour’s. The patch of land the garden is currently on, was always overgrown, with an outside toilet.

Outside their front door
I wonder will we be able to trace our own past with photographs when today’s photos are all digitally recorded, residing on volatile disk drives and memory cards?
